Hello,
Info is widely available on both North & South major officers/strategies. This is well-tilled soil. That includes Pickett’s Charge @Gettysburg. The short answer is they tried a massive frontal assault. It put about 13K men into the maelstrom. Only 4-5K made it back to the Southern lines. Many Historians view that bloody mistake to have been the turning point of the war. I once saw a reenactment of the charge. It was brutal. The only way all 13K didn’t get slaughtered, was those 4-5K seeing the futility before it was too late. I really liked a one-volume overall view of the war titled “Battle Cry Of Freedom.” (Macpherson) I’m sure their are many better books for strategies out there. A point to remember, is that the Southern officers were mostly trained @West Point, alongside the North’s.
